After a contentious fight over the proposed “Head Count Tax” for large employers by the Seattle City Council, Amazon has followed through, at least partially, on its threat to move employees out of Seattle. The “Head Count Tax” never became law in Seattle, but nonetheless, Amazon has announced a plan to move the worldwide operations team to nearby Bellevue, Washington. The team, one of the most critical at Amazon is responsible for ensuring packages are delivered to customers. While Amazon has 700 employees in Bellevue, and more than 45,000 in Seattle, the news is noteworthy considering Amazon recently announced plans to lease 715,000 square feet of office space in Bellevue, and Amazon’s decision to no longer lease 722,000 square feet in the new Rainier Tower in downtown Seattle, space for nearly 3,500 workers.
